Considered one of the world’s best footballers of his generation, and one of the best African players of all time, Samuel Eto’o has compiled a very impressive record, with 307 goals in 633 matches, 130 of them scored during his five seasons with FC Barcelona. This resumé makes him a highly coveted figure for nearly all the clubs lately.
With a few more days left for him on field of Everton FC, where he landed in 2014, outside the stadium “Number 9,” as the fans call him, was considering other offers: first, the Brazilian club Santos; then the Sampdoria of Genoa; and finally the New York Cosmos, who after having hired Raul and reportedly courting Steven Gérard, wanted to see the name of this boy blessed by the gods of football inscribed among the crowd of superstars who have signed with the club.
ESPN UK reported that Eto’o was a target for the Cosmos club, which is in the North American Soccer League, the 2nd Division of the US Soccer Federation. Apparently, the interest was there, but not the cash, and a trade to a well-off club would have aided their suit: “The Cosmos would have to be very creative and present a financial package Eto’o would be at comfortable with.” A source close to the negotiations said at the time that “the MLS (Major League Soccer) also knows that there is a good chance that Sampdoria could attract Eto’o in an arrangement in which he plays for them and then goes to play for a wealthy team in Asia or the Middle East.
As it turns out, Eto’o’s agent, Claudio Vigorelli, has announced that the former star of Inter Milan is looking forward to a return to Italy, while waiting for Everton to complete administrative details--but this time with Sampdoria--despite a more lucrative offer from the Brazilian Santos. The details of his transfer are being worked out to finalize his move to Sampdoria this weekend, so he can make his debut the following weekend at Cagliari, his agent told the newspaper Il Secolo XIX Genovese: “He has chosen Genoa [home of the Sampdoria] and is really motivated. …In the final hours, an offer arrived from the Santos that was better financially, but he was not interested by it. His family lives in Milan, and he dreams of playing in an exciting place like Genoa where he will finish out his career…He will live in Genoa and commute between Milan and Genoa. He is a great professional who has done well wherever he is.”
We wish him good luck!!!!
